Art & Design

Art and Design at Sutton Veny

We believe that every child has the right to receive a high-quality art and design education. We ensure that our curriculum is broad, balanced and interesting so that the children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Our Art and Design Curriculum follows the main key art skills: drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printing and textiles. The children will also learn about artists, craft makers, architects and designers in history.
We work together as a staff to ensure that our art curriculum provides continuity and progression throughout the school. In each year group the children revisit and build upon skills previously learnt so that they develop a wide range of art and design techniques. As the children progress, they are then able to think more critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. By the end of each key stage the children are able to apply these skills and processes learnt.
These follow the aims of study outlined in the national curriculum. The skills are planned to ensure a balance of art, craft and design so that the children learn:

To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.

To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

About great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

How art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Much of the work in Art and Design is of a practical nature and the children are given every opportunity produce their own creative work, explore their own ideas and record their experiences. In order to do this each child has their own sketch book to review and revisit ideas and record their work. The children take great care in these books and they are passed on to the next class. In Years 1 and 2, the children have a portfolio of artwork which the children are very proud of. These books demonstrate the level of each child’s achievement and the progress they have made. When they are full they take them home to keep and share with their family.

The quality of the children’s art work can also be seen in displays throughout the school. In the summer term we hold an annual arts week and invite parents to support our arts day. The children work in groups of all different ages and produce stunning work.
