R.E. (Religious Education)

R.E. in Sutton Veny School follows the Wiltshire locally agreed syllabus for R.E. As a Church of England school the Christian calendar is a vibrant thread throughout the year. R.E. is taught in blocked weeks each term, with Christianity being taught in every year group. This allows in-depth exploration of key questions allowing children to explore, question and deepen their understanding of religious literacy. The children follow an enquiry-based approach using the resource -Understanding Christianity and Discovery R.E.

In Key stage one the children learn about: Judaism, Islam and Christianity. In Key Stage two the children learn about: Hinduism Sikhism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. Learning about the world religions allows children to make connections with their own beliefs and ideas.

The children take pride in recording their written work in R.E. books, but their learning may also take place through story, drama, art or music. Through R.E. lessons the children also develop their critical thinking skills. They experience valuable opportunities to explore spiritual, moral, social and cultural questions relevant to their lives.

In term one, throughout the school, the children were involved a ‘Spirited you’ week enabling the children to take part in a Peace Walk. They explored their own spirituality through nature and also by thinking of others. In term two, both key stages explore the key concept- Incarnation.

In term three, the year groups focus on the exploration of a different world faith. In term four, the Christian concept, Salvation, will be the focus from EYFS to year six alongside a whole school ‘spirited art’ project.

In term five the classes focus on other world religions and in term six the focus is the Christian concept- Gospel
