Physical Education at Sutton Veny CE Primary School
At Sutton Veny, we value the impact physical education has on the lives of children and are committed to providing high-quality physical education for all pupils. Our teaching aims to help all pupils maximise their potential in this area of the curriculum, by offering them a wide range of opportunities to acquire and apply a range of physical skills. To help facilitate their development further we offer a wide range of extra-curricular sporting clubs for Years 1 – 6. We strive to foster a love of physical activity that pupils will carry forward with them through life, thus promoting and contributing to a healthy, active lifestyle.
Foundation Stage and Key Stage One
During the first years of school, children need to develop their physical literacy to become confident in a range of basic physical skills. For example: running, stopping, hopping, throwing, catching, skipping, striking, ball control, aiming, balance, hand-eye coordination, jumping and landing. It is vital pupils have the opportunity to develop these key skills. This will enable them to participate in a range of sports and activities with greater confidence as they progress through the school. Pupils will acquire and develop these skills through a range of different activities, including:
- Indoor PE
- Outdoor Games
In Year 2, pupils will begin to learn basic tactics for different sports and start swimming lessons. This is in preparation for moving into Key Stage Two.
Key Stage Two
Throughout Key Stage Two, pupils will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills. They will build on the basic skills they have acquired in Key Stage One and learn how to apply these in a wide range of sports and activities. Pupils are taught the importance of collaboration and communication when competing. They also learn to evaluate and improve their skill level, technique and performance while recognising their successes.
Pupils will experience a broad range of sporting activities during their time in Key Stage Two. These opportunities will help pupils broaden their knowledge of different rules, tactics and other elements of effective individual and team performance. Throughout their time in Key Stage Two, pupils will be taught and experience the following:
