Geography at Sutton Veny

We believe that every child has the right to receive a high quality geography education. We ensure that our curriculum is broad, balanced and interesting in order to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.

Our Geography curriculum is organised into topics for each key stage. These follow programmes of study outlined in the national curriculum. The topics are planned to ensure a balance of locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork. We work together as a staff to ensure that our Geography curriculum provides continuity and progression throughout the school.

Much of the work in Geography is of a practical nature and the children are given opportunities to collect, analyse and communicate data collected through fieldwork. They also develop their knowledge of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments by interpreting and communicating a range of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, photographs and text.

All of the children have a Topic book in which they record their Geography work alongside any work completed in History. The children take great pride in these books and they demonstrate the high level of each child’s achievement and progress.
